Regulation is a key driver for towbar design. In Europe, ECE 55 defines most aspects of towbar design; from the height of the ball in respect of the ground, to the durability testing of the assembly. It runs to 72 pages. In America they have SAE J684, which has similar aims but a lighter approach. […]
Carbon bike’s offer lower weight, and sales are expected to grow by 27% per annum. Most carbon bike manufacturer’s explicitly prohibit clamping of the frame. They also do not recommend fork mounting either. https://auxtail.com/about/carbon-clamping/ By gripping only the front tyre, there is no chance of carbon crush. Bikes were weighted up to the max and some hard cornering carried out. No issues.
If you look closely you can see we added mass to both bikes to simulate a heavy electrical bike (25Kg) and then applied full brakes to check all is safe.
Bikes have are loaded with some extra weights to take to 25Kg each, and then we passed the bump. This is not so scientific, but we did take to Millbrook proving ground and checked lots of different road surfaces at a variety of speeds, so you can feel safe.
